InDis – Ep 010 – The Crystal Ball

Happy Birthday to me! After an unexpected week off, we’re back with a little extra in the show for you. It’s a long show, but we had fun doing it. We start with this week’s distractions, as usual. Geoff touches on news from last week and a little from the week we missed. Chris gives Fox news a piece of his mind after their erroneous report on Mass Effect. Then it’s on to the predictions of 2008. We’ll revisit these next year to see who was right and wrong. Follow that up with New Releases, Email and the Amazing Question of the week, and you’ve got yourself the first double digit Interactive Distractions show!

Thanks for listening!

Question of the week: Do games make the system, or does the system make the games?

Remember, the InDis email line is open 24/7.
Wanna tell us we suck for missing a week? Miss the background music from the first 2 shows? Wanna send Geoff more hate mail? Drop us a line at email@interactivedistractions.com.

Note: We do want to say that we respect that Ms. Lawrence has apologized about the report on Mass Effect. It takes a lot of courage for someone to come out and say they were wrong. I personally would like to say that we recorded this show before that happened and my Dear X would have been a bit different if this report had come earlier.

Attention on site listeners!!

If you are playing this file directly from the server and it is speeding it up and making us sound like we’re chipmunks, it’s because of a bug in Flash. However, the latest Flash player has fixed this bug, so if you want to play it from the site, I would suggest updating your Flash player, as we are not sure why this episode is different from others and it’s not working correctly.  Also, the podcast sounds fine if you download it. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Im going to have to disagree with way sooooo much stuff Geoff was saying about 2008. Guerrilla Games…you and no one else really knows what they are capable off, Killzone 1 was developed by them independently Sony didn’t come into extremely late on. Comparing Killzone 2 to Resistance 2 again we can’t guess all we have on Resistance is a few screenshots and we have no info on Killzone’s multi-player. Also these rumors of it being rushed…”rumors!” and Guerrilla have said they will not advance the release. And what harm would 1 in September and November do? what about Halo 3 and Bioshock?

LBP has likely been the biggest newly announced game off 2007 its reception from the press and the gamers has been unreal. How many forums have you looked at were people have been saying “Oh i’m not interested in that”

Home and in game xmb. Thats already been shown and confirmed. E3 2007 you seen friends invites via home and xmb in game has been confirmed. How many features will it have? dont know yet but we will see those things

Final Fantasy VII coming out on the Xbox 360? Not even multi-platform! Remember Sony do own a share in Square are they really going to although it?

Now I can’t remember what else I was going to complain about lol

How can you say we don’t know what guerrilla is capable of? They put out Killzone 1 which was barely playable on the PS2…..but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt in the fact they didn’t have much to work with. However Shellshock for the Xbox was utter crap and Xbox was much more suited for a FPS. Now they have the task of developing the game that many think will put the PS3 back on top…….the most hyped up game a new Sony console has ever seen……..a console in which many developers have trouble on…many proven developers. How can we be so sure the guys that couldn’t get a game right on Xbox and PS2 will nail it on PS3?

In regards to LBP, like I said on the podcast, yes the media and HARDCORE gamers are salivating over it. But we people who listen to podcasts and post on forums while we should be at work are a very small group. A game like LBP will have to take over a huge market that not only do not have PS3s….tend to shy away from “kiddy” games. Ratchet and CLank is a well known IP that went virtually ignored by PS3 owners. How can a brand new IP that relies on user created content be an intant hit with the casual market? Again…the hardocre audience is all about LBP…..but we were also all over Okami, Ratchet and Clank and NiGHTs…and look how those games did at reatail. Like I said on the podcast…it’ll be a GREAT game and critically acclaimed…but ignored by the general public.

I won’t discuss HOME on here because I could literally go on forever. We’ve got nothing from Sony regarding HOME except what it “will” have…..we’ve seen nothing concrete…and we havn’t even seen that promised beta that was supposed to be released last year.

As for FFVII. I never said 360 exclusive…..I said it’d be announced this year and Multiplatform. I said they would likely stick to the Sony platforms if the 360 wasn’t doing so well in NA. But for Square to remake their most popular game ever and ignore the 360 market in NA would be like ignoring a bag of million dollar bills left on their front doorstep.

But once you come back with your other complaints….bring it on ;)

That’s the fun in doing this……next year we’ll see whether or not I was bang on….or totally off

I can’t even remember what my other complaints were now lol not that they are really complaints as its your opinion so that fair enough

Back onto Killzone. Yeh they made a couple of games that aren’t rated highly by most but I would totally disagree with Killzone 1 being “barely playable” it just a case of the hardware was pushed to far at that time so the game suffered. Shellshock I’ve never played and I’ll trust you about how bad it is. But the point I am making here is the company that made those games is a very different company now, Sony didn’t come into Killzone until late in the development so the game really was an independent game and it wasn’t until December 2005 (more than a year after Killzone) that Sony bought Guerrilla Games and its went through massive changes prior to Killzone 1 and then after Sony buying them out so you can’t judge Kilzone 2 on those ideas off how good a developer Guerrilla are. Plus isn’t it possible for developers to make great games and then shit ones? and the other way round to?

For LBP I’ll agree that how much off an instant success it will be is questionable…depends on how its marketed. But its the hardcore gamers that get into the game and start creating are the ones who will make it a success. If you look at the Total War series on PC or Unreal for example what makes them successful are the people making the mods. I see LBP being possibly more off a slow burner, but then again depending on how much the PS3 install base grows this year is could be a smash hit straight out off the box

Home I’ll leave alone aswell. Although I would say the delay is more likely to do with the scale off the project and I don’t think Sony really thought about it. They are basically making a non-combat mmorpg and that type of thing isn’t easy to do. Just making a world that able to accommodate thousands of people online at once without anything else is a challenge.

FFVII…think i worded it abit wrong. I know you didn’t mean as a 360 exclusive. And i get your point aswell but ill mention this again. Sony are the second biggest shareholders in Square and I do not see them letting it to go to 360 aswell as PS3. Actually to be honest I don’t think we are going to see FFVII remade at all. Atleast not for ages. Square have so many projects on the go what with about the million FFXIII games they are making plus all the other projects. And I think with FFVII they are worried about what damage a remake might do to the games status as one off the best games ever made.

Oh just remembered another complaint! Get onto vgevo.com!
