Final Fantasy 13 to possibly be the last “true” installment?
I’m not going to say that this isn’t possible, so I will just venture a guess and say it’s….highly improbable. Of course, president for Square Enix, Yoichi Wada, expects Final Fantasy 13 to make a MILLION BILLION dollars, but he also firmly believes that the company should start heading in an opposite direction with their future titles. He was quoted saying:
I believe Final Fantasy 13 is going be something special, and that it’s going to be well received by the audience. But whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen, because I actually feel that the team that was involved with Final Fantasy 13 should next move on to create and generate some ‘next generation’ forms of play.
I really think that the Final Fantasy team could create something completely different, but at the moment they’re strictly catering to the particular audience they have now.
Okay, so big number 13 is most likely not the last Final Fantasy “proper”, but we have seen gamers’ interest for JRPGs diminish as this latest console generation continues.
That being said, maybe Square Enix notices that and is, indeed, thinking about heading in a new direction soon.

As you said, highly improbable… Maybe they will try it some time, but when they see its audience isn’t so interested in MMORPGs or adventure game spin-offs, they will be back, full speed on the Final Fantasy “proper” franchise.
